Alex Hickman is a Senior Managing Director with Teneo, based in London. Alex advises clients on political matters in the UK, drawing on over twenty years as a campaigner, think tanker and as an adviser to two British Prime Ministers – Boris Johnson in Downing Street, and David Cameron while Opposition Leader.
Alex began his career as a campaigner for an international NGO, running communications campaigns and building coalitions in Uganda, Tanzania and Zimbabwe for an international NGO. He was CEO of ‘Europe Yes Euro No’, a cross party campaign opposed to UK membership of the euro, founded the Open Europe think tank, worked as an adviser to David Cameron while he served as opposition leader and worked on the 2016 Vote Leave campaign. Alex has also worked in the Balkans as a journalist for the Economist Intelligence Unit and spent nine years as founder and CEO of an international advisory boutique. In March 2020, he became the Prime Minister’s Special Adviser on Business and Appointments, leading on business engagement in the UK and around the world.
While in Downing Street, Alex worked closely with the Prime Minister and Secretaries of State, designing and implementing policy, and building coalitions inside and outside government. Alex leveraged No10’s convening power to progress the UK’s post-Brexit business priorities including becoming a science & tech superpower, growing investment in green infrastructure, making UK capital markets more competitive and improving UK regulation.
Alex has held a number of non executive roles, including as a trustee of Restless Development, an NGO running youth empowerment programmes in Africa and Asia. He is founder and chair of African Mountain Research Foundation, a UK charity facilitating data generation and scientific research across the mountain systems of southern Africa, and co-founder of Plant For Our Lives, an award-winning community hedge and tree planting group in Wiltshire. Alex is an ECB Level II qualified cricket coach.
