John Shield is a seasoned communications leader who recently joined Teneo’s Strategy & Communications practice in London, bringing with him over a decade of unparalleled experience at the BBC.
Prior to joining Teneo in June 2025, John served as the Director of Communications at the BBC for 12 years, where he oversaw the Corporation’s entire communications portfolio – including high-profile campaigns, strategic messaging and public affairs initiatives. During his tenure, he navigated the BBC through challenging and transformative periods marked by editorial controversies, governance reviews and organisational change – including stabilisation efforts following the Savile scandal and critical crises such as the gender pay disclosures.
Before his time at the BBC, John held pivotal communications roles within the UK Government. He was the Director of Communications for both the Department for Work and Pensions and the Department for Communities and Local Government, Head of News at the Department for Education and Skills and undertook notable stints in Number 10 (the Prime Minister’s Office) and the Foreign Office – building a reputation for calm, decisive leadership in high-pressure environments.
Today at Teneo, John brings this depth of experience to advising global clients on strategic communications, with a particular emphasis on crisis preparedness and response. His expertise in managing complex, high-stakes messaging makes him a highly regarded practitioner in his field.
