Ben Silcox

Senior Manager

Ben Silcox is a Senior Manager with Teneo’s Energy & Infrastructure practice, based in Berlin.

Ben has significant experience advising clients across the cleantech ecosystem with a focus on the entire battery and energy storage value chain. He brings a depth of experience with growth strategy, due diligence and M&A for international clients.

Prior to joining Teneo, Ben spent 3.5 years at Apricum, a boutique strategy consulting and transaction advisory firm with a focus on cleantech. His clients have included European private equity and corporate venture capital, sovereign wealth funds, independent power producers, energy storage integrators, utilities and cleantech startups.

Ben holds a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Michigan, where he wrote his thesis on novel materials for non-aqueous redox flow battery electrolytes, as well as an M.S. Imperial College London and a B.S. from the University of Utah.

 

Select Project Experience:

  • LiOH market assessment, Europe: Led a team performing a market screening of the European lithium hydroxide market in preparation for a corporate venture capital investment, including supply and demand forecasting, competitive landscape mapping, value chain and regulatory analysis, as well as technology, offtake and project feasibility assessment.
  • Silicon anode fundraise, Europe: Executed a €250M capital raise for a silicon anode spinoff including IM and teaser development, investor outreach, management coaching and ad hoc and closing support.
  • Silicon anode due diligence, U.S.: Completed a commercial due diligence for the $600M+ Series C funding round of a silicon anode startup, assessing the Target’s addressable market, competitive landscape, technical USP, manufacturing ramp-up assumptions and valuation.
  • Gigafactory equipment assessment, Europe: Evaluated the current status of Li-ion battery manufacturing to assess the attractiveness of the gigafactory market for the client’s equipment, including demand, supply and pricing forecasts, a detailed overview of key lithium-ion technologies, assessment of the Li-ion cell manufacturers most likely to survive, key incentives and regulations, the cell manufacturing process and a mapping of the gigafactory siting, construction and equipment procurement process.
  • Li-ion cell manufacturing strategy review, Europe: Performed a strategy review of a Li-ion cell manufacturer to develop a sustainable and achievable growth strategy, including an assessment of the Li-ion battery market, customers and their purchasing criteria, the Client’s current positioning and how to win in the market, manufacturing ramp-up assumption redesign, supply chain strategy and risk assessment.
  • BESS supply chain strategy, UK: Redeveloped the supply chain strategy of a UK IPP with a focus on security of supply and ESG through 16 supply chain initiatives and key risks developed from a market and trend assessment, supplier interviews and profiling, competitor strategies and an assessment of potential internalization and partnership opportunities.
  • BESS deployment strategy, MENA: Developed the BESS deployment strategy for a MENA utility, including preferred business model, deployment timeline, volume and site strategy, preferred financing options and implementation plan, with further implementation support to realize the deployment strategy.
  • Battery recycling models, Europe: Identified and mapped current battery recycling reverse logistics models present in Europe and forecasted the winning strategies for the future, supported by a market and trend assessment, regulatory analysis, as well as competitor interviews, profiling and archetyping.
