Deputy General Counsel, 12m Fixed Term Contract

Teneo has a fantastic opportunity for a UK qualified lawyer to join our London office on a fixed term contract basis to cover a period of maternity leave. As the Deputy General Counsel, the role will focus on UK and non-US (EMEA and Asia Pacific) legal matters across all of Teneo’s businesses (strategy and communications, management consulting, financial advisory and people advisory) and you will manage one junior lawyer based in the UK. You will work very closely with the legal team based in the US. This role directly reports into the General Counsel based in New York.

For this position we are seeking a candidate with upwards of 7 years’ experience ideally gained within a  similar consultancy environment, or at a multinational and/or US headquartered business.

Key responsibilities

  • Prepare, review and assist in negotiating contracts across all business activities, including engagement letters, non-disclosure agreements, vendor contracts, master service agreements, collaboration agreements
  • Create and/or update standard form agreements and legal policies
  • Manage a wide range of legal issues such as intellectual property, GDPR, IT/cloud, procurement of goods and services and IR35
  • Lead or assist domestic and international regulatory compliance in general and specific compliance projects
  • Assist with and prepare legal documentation for corporate restructuring projects
  • Collaborate with business team leaders to support initiatives and resolve issues
  • Assist where required with corporate transactions
  • General corporate requirements, including archive maintenance, best practice initiatives and general corporate housekeeping matters such as companies house filings, drafting minutes and resolutions.
  • Running periodic employee trainings on relevant matters, e.g. GDPR, contract law
  • Preparation for and participation in ESG audits and compliance
  • Monitor legal developments and translate them into clear, actionable plans for the business
  • Supervision and mentoring of a junior lawyer

Skills & Experience

  • UK qualified lawyer with 7+ years PQE with some in-house experience, ideally in a multinational and/or US headquartered business
  • Ability to analyse complex business and legal issues and manage legal risks
  • Strong negotiation presence and ability to achieve commercially successful compromise
  • Have a practical, business-oriented approach to problem-solving and can effectively counsel internal clients by providing them with clear, concise and commercially practical advice
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize
  • Excellent verbal, legal drafting and written communication skills
  • Management of junior lawyers
  • French or German language skills would be beneficial but not essential
